DESCRIPTION:BACHtoberfest 2025\nLearn More & Buy Tickets \nSimone Dinnerstein\, Music Worcester’s first Artist in Residence (2018-2019)\, returns to Worcester for BACHtoberfest 2025 to perform two headlining concerts this festival weekend. With long-time collaborator Alexis Gerlach\, the duo brings a unique interpretation of J.S. Bach’s Gamba Sonatas to this headlining performance\, alongside the complete Inventions and Sinfonias. \nHer work with Bach’s Inventions and Sinfonias originally debuted in album-format in 2014\, still receiving attention for her interpretations. Dinnerstein’s performances of Bach’s keyboard works have garnered her acclaim and recognition for both her accuracy and interpretation. This program also features three sonatas for viola da gamba and harpsichord\, which musically reference some of Bach’s other sonatas written for two instruments. \nBach’s Inventions & Sinfonias are indispensable to pianists\, being both a classroom and playground. Made up of thirty small works ranging in complexity\, this collection of works has acted as a lifelong companion for Dinnerstein. There are instances of imitation\, repetition\, canons\, and harmonic development that push these works from practice to concert hall. \n“The first keyboard pieces of Bach that I remember hearing were his Inventions\, when I was nine years old. The music seemed impossibly expressive and virtuosic at the time\, and wholly beyond my abilities. Here were two continuous and independent voices\, neither of which was subservient to the other. Until then I had thought of music as melody and accompaniment. Instrumental training is as much a training in how to listen as in how to play. In the text that accompanies the Inventions\, Bach calls them ‘an honest guide.’ His Inventions and Sinfonias are marvels in demonstrating just how potent counterpoint is as an aid to expression\, and how powerful a cantabile voice can be when surrounded by contradiction and elaboration. The Washington Post has called her “an artist of strikingly original ideas and irrefutable integrity.” She first came to wider public attention in 2007 through her recording of Bach’s Goldberg Variations\, reflecting an aesthetic that was both deeply rooted in the score and profoundly idiosyncratic. She is\, wrote The New York Times\, “a unique voice in the forest of Bach interpretation.” \nShow More \nSince that recording\, she has had a busy performing career. She has played with orchestras ranging from the New York Philharmonic and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra to the London Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale Rai. She has performed in venues from Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center to the Berlin Philharmonie\, the Vienna Konzerthaus\, the Seoul Arts Center and the Sydney Opera House. \nSimone has made fourteen albums\, all of which topped the Billboard classical charts\, with repertoire ranging from Couperin to Glass. She released her newest album\, The Eye is the First Circle\, on October 18\, 2024 via Supertrain Records. The album features Charles Ives’ Concord Sonata and its release was timed to coincide with the American composer’s 150th birthday. The new album is a live recording of the premiere of Simone’s multimedia production of the same title\, which she conceived and directed. The performance took place at the Alexander Kasser Theater\, Montclair State University\, New Jersey. The Eye is the First Circle also marks her fourteenth and final recording produced with the late Adam Abeshouse. \nFrom 2020 to 2022\, she released a trilogy of albums recorded at her home in Brooklyn during the pandemic. A Character of Quiet (Orange Mountain Music\, 2020)\, featuring the music of Philip Glass and Schubert\, was described by NPR as\, “music that speaks to a sense of the world slowing down\,” and by The New Yorker as\, “a reminder that quiet can contain multitudes.” Richard Danielpour’s An American Mosaic (Supertrain Records\, 2021)\, surpassed two million streams on Apple Music and was nominated for a 2021 Grammy Award in the category of Best Classical Instrumental Solo. The final installment in the trilogy\, Undersong\, was released in January 2022 on Orange Mountain Music. \nIn recent years\, Simone has created projects that express her broad musical interests. She gave the world premiere of The Eye Is the First Circle at Montclair State University\, the first multi-media production she conceived\, created\, and directed\, which uses as source materials her father Simon Dinnerstein’s painting The Fulbright Triptych and Charles Ives’s Piano Sonata No. 2. She continues to perform it across the country this season. She premiered Richard Danielpour’s An American Mosaic\, a tribute to those affected by the pandemic\, in a performance on multiple pianos throughout Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery. Following her recording Mozart in Havana\, she brought the Havana Lyceum Orchestra from Cuba to the U.S. for the first time\, performing eleven concerts. Philip Glass composed his Piano Concerto No. 3 for her\, co-commissioned by twelve orchestras. Working with Renée Fleming and the Emerson String Quartet\, she premiered André Previn and Tom Stoppard’s Penelope at the Tanglewood\, Ravinia and Aspen music festivals\, and performed it at Carnegie Hall\, the Kennedy Center\, and presented by LA Opera. She has also created her own ensemble\, Baroklyn\, which she directs from the keyboard. This season\, Simone presents two series anchored by Bach at Miller Theatre at Columbia University and three performances at the Gogue Center for the Performing Arts at Auburn University one of which features The Eye is the First Circle. She makes her final appearance alongside Renée Fleming\, Merle Dandridge\, and the Emerson String Quartet as the featured pianist\, performing André Previn’s Penelope presented by the Cleveland Orchestra\, before the quartet disbands. Additionally this season\, she joins Awadagin Pratt for a four-hand piano program presented by Washington Performing Arts at The Kennedy Center\, and is the featured soloist for the Chamber Orchestra of New York’s performance at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall. \nSimone is committed to giving concerts in non-traditional venues and to audiences who don’t often hear classical music. For the last three decades\, she has played concerts throughout the United States for the Piatigorsky Foundation\, an organization dedicated to the widespread dissemination of classical music. It was for the Piatigorsky Foundation that she gave the first piano recital in the Louisiana state prison system at the Avoyelles Correctional Center. She has also performed at the Maryland Correctional Institution for Women in a concert organized by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. In 2009\, Simone founded Neighborhood Classics\, a concert series open to the public and hosted by New York City Public Schools to raise funds for their music education programs. She also created a program called Bachpacking during which she brought a digital keyboard to elementary school classrooms\, helping young children get close to the music she loves. She is a committed supporter and proud alumna of Philadelphia’s Astral Artists\, which supports young performers. Simone is on the piano faculty of the Mannes School of Music and is a guest host/producer of WQXR’s Young Artists Showcase. \nSimone counts herself fortunate to have studied with three unique artists: Solomon Mikowsky\, Maria Curcio and Peter Serkin\, very different musicians who shared the belief that playing the piano is a means to something greater. The Washington Post comments that “ultimately\, it is Dinnerstein’s unreserved identification with every note she plays that makes her performance so spellbinding.” In a world where music is everywhere\, she hopes that it can still be transformative.

The afternoon highlights Bach’s secular and sacred organ works\, and continues THE COMPLETE BACH’s annual tradition of recitals for organ. Featuring the Mechanics Hall’s Hook Organ\, an institution in Worcester for more than 160 years\, this performance allows the listener to experience the robust sound and feeling of a pipe organ.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 1863\, Elias and George Hook began the installation of the custom-built instrument\, fit perfectly for the Great Hall. The Hook Organ is made up of 3\,504 pipes and 52 stops. Listeners flock to hear this organ played\, both for its history and for its intensity and story. Well respected in both secular and sacred genres of his field\, he has taught the enchantment of music to both public and private institutions in the greater Boston area for many years. His silent film performances have been hailed in the press as “a great marriage of movie and music.” \nSpecializing in the art of live silent film accompaniment\, worldwide\, some of his many appearances have included such venues as The Schermerhorn Symphony Center\, (Nashville)\, Riverside Church\, (NYC)\, Coral Ridge\, (Fort Lauderdale)\, Irvine Auditorium\,  (University of Pennsylvania)\, Trinity Wall Street (NYC)\, Wanamaker’s-Macy’s Greek Hall (Philadelphia)\, St Joseph’s Cathedral (Hartford)\, Old South Church (Boston)\, National City Christian Church (Washington\, DC)\, St Joseph’s Oratory (Montreal)\, The Kotzschmar Organ\, (Portland)\, The Great Organ at Methuen Music Hall\, and major concert halls in the cities of Yokohama\, Fukui\, Miyazaki and Kanazawa\, Japan as part of seven tours in that country. \nA multiple prize-winner\, he is the recipient of the First Prize in Improvisation from the American Guild of Organists National Competition. A seasoned performer\, he has played recitals at Notre-Dame Cathedral (Paris)\, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels\, (Los Angeles)\, Holy Name Cathedral\, (Chicago) and Mikael Agricola Church\, (Helsinki). \nPast Dean of the Boston Chapter AGO\, Mr. Krasinski is a member of the Screen Actors Guild\, is credited as organist and choir leader in the film THE HOLDOVERS\, and was a vital contributor towards establishing an accurate portrayal for director Alexander Payne. He is Principal Organist at Mechanics Hall\, Worcester\, House Organist at the Providence Performing Arts Center\, Organist at the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help\, Mission Church\, Boston\, and the First Church of Christ\, Scientist in Providence RI as well as accompanist at Beth El Temple Center\, Belmont. A distinguished pedagogue\, he recently presented Master Classes at the Sibelius Academy\, Helsinki\, Finland. DESCRIPTION:BACHtoberfest 2025\nLearn More & Buy Tickets  \nFresh off the release of their first professional recording\, Simone Dinnerstein’s chamber ensemble Baroklyn joins Connecticut-based professional choir CONCORA in a program of two cantatas\, Es ist das Heil uns kommen her (BWV9)\, and Himmelskönig\, sei willkommen (BWV182).  \nDinnerstein leads from the keyboard providing a rare opportunity to hear the piano as a continuo instrument\, just as Mendelssohn did in his own performances of Bach’s choral works. The evening features Dinnerstein’s performance of Bach’s Concerto in E Major (BWV1053) with Baroklyn\, as well as a number of arrangements of chorale-preludes included in their debut recording. \nThe first of these cantatas (BWV 9) was used for Lutheran teachings\, centering around salvation; “Salvation now has come for all” became a theme amongst authors and composers. In partnership with Crocodile River Music\, the Worcester-based organization showcasing African artists\, Ladysmith Black Mambazo shares their trademark tight harmony and exciting rhythm. You may know the group from Paul Simon’s Graceland album\, but since then we’ve heard so much more from the ensemble\, which is one of the (if not the) most famous South African musical groups of all time. \nIn this performance filled with groove\, traditional instrumentation\, and energy that’s filled the hall since 1960\, audiences are also introduced to historically informed style. Bringing Isicathamiya to the stage – a style of Zulu a capella – the group provides a powerful and approachable introduction to South African musical style.  \n\nBuy Tickets \n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Crocodile River Music\n\nCrocodile River Music was established in 2011 by Zach Combs and Issa Coulibaly to support African artists in presenting music\, dance\, and art that both educates and connects audiences of all ages\, backgrounds\, and capabilities. \nIn 2012\, we launched the African Arts in Education program\, allowing us to extend our reach to schools and community groups. This program has served over 200\,000 students in its first ten years\, leaving a lasting impact through interactive workshops\, compelling performances\, and engaging school residencies. \nToday as a Worcester-based nonprofit organization\, our offerings – including concerts\, workshops\, lectures\, and other educational programs – showcase emerging and established African artists to inform\, connect\, and inspire audiences. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Ladysmith Black Mambazo\n\n\nLet us tell you a story. An impossible to believe\, yet\, true story. Once upon a time there was a teenage boy working on his family farm in apartheid South Africa. The year was 1960. This boy  loved to sing\, in fact he loved to sing so much that he allowed himself an impossible dream. In  his dream he would create a group of singers\, from his family members\, to sing traditional South  African songs. His group would perform all over South Africa and they would become the  greatest music group his country would ever know. How could such a dream come to a young  farm boy in a country rife with hardship\, violence and trouble? Well\, Joseph Shabalala was this  young farm boy and his dream would become Ladysmith Black Mambazo.  \nShow More \nThe year 2025 marks the 65th anniversary of Joseph Shabalala forming Ladysmith Black Mambazo. His group would not only conquer all of South Africa\, but would become a worldwide  phenomenon\, winning more GRAMMY Awards (Five)\, and receiving more GRAMMY Award  nominations (Nineteen)\, than any World Music group in the history of recorded music.  \nDuring the dark years of South African Apartheid\, Ladysmith Black Mambazo followed a path of  peaceful protest through songs of hope and love. When Nelson Mandela was released from  prison\, in 1990\, he said that Ladysmith Black Mambazo’s music was a powerful message of  peace that he listened to while in jail. When Mandela was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize\, in  1993\, he asked the group to join him at the ceremony. It was Mandela who called Ladysmith  Black Mambazo “South Africa’s Cultural Ambassadors to the World.”  \nThe group sings a traditional music style called isicathamiya (Is-Cot-A-Mee-Ya)\, which developed in the mines of South Africa. It was there that black workers were taken to work far away from their homes and families. Poorly housed and paid\, the mine workers would entertain themselves\, after a six-day work week\, by singing songs into the wee hours on  Saturday night and Sunday. When the miners returned to their homes\, this musical tradition  returned with them.  \nIn the mid-1980s\, American singer/songwriter Paul Simon famously visited South Africa and  incorporated the group’s rich harmonies into his renowned Graceland album – a landmark recording considered seminal in introducing World Music to mainstream audiences. This  brought the group to the attention of music lovers all over the world\, the beginning of a global  musical career that shows no sign of ending.  \nAfter leading his group for over fifty years and approaching his seventy-fifth birthday\, Joseph  Shabalala retired in 2014\, handing the leadership to his three sons\, Thulani\, Sibongiseni and  Thamsanqa Shabalala. Having joined their father’s group in 1993\, their many years of training  had prepared them in ways no others could be trained. Now\, carrying their father’s dream into  the future\, the Shabalala Family continues the group’s success for the world to hear.  \nLadysmith Black Mambazo is Thulani Shabalala\, Sibongiseni Shabalala\, Thamsanqa Shabalala\, Msizi Shabalala\, Albert Mazibuko\, Abednego Mazibuko\, Mfanafuthi Dlamini\, Pius Shezi and Sabelo Mthembu.

DESCRIPTION:Pipe Organ Encounters (POE) is an educational outreach program of the American Guild of Organists intended to introduce the organ to young people and adults. During his four years in Washington\, LTC Robinson’s ensembles participated in such events as the 44th Presidential Inauguration\, the dedication of the National World War II Memorial\, the State Funerals of President Ronald Reagan and President Gerald Ford\, the nationally televised “Christmas in Washington\,” the Kennedy Center Honors\, and “A Capital Fourth\,” as well as performances with the National Symphony Orchestra\, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra\, and Akron Symphony Orchestra. \nHe holds a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from Hartwick College and a Master of Music in Conducting from the New England Conservatory of Music\, where he was a student of Frank Battisti. LTC Robinson is a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia\, the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles\, and the Adjutant General Corps Regimental Association. \n\n\nSoldiers’ Chorus  \nThe Soldiers’ Chorus\, founded in 1957\, is the vocal complement of The United States Army Field Band of Washington\, DC.  The 24-member mixed choral ensemble travels throughout the nation and abroad\, performing as a separate component and in joint concerts with the Concert Band of The Musical Ambassadors of the Army.  The chorus has performed in all fifty states\, Canada\, Mexico\, India\, the Far East\, and throughout Europe\, entertaining audiences of all ages.  \nShow More \nThe diverse musical backgrounds of Soldiers’ Chorus personnel provide the ensemble with unique flexibility\, and in addition to presenting selections from the vast choral repertoire\, each member of the ensemble is an accomplished soloist in their own right.
