SUMMARY:Music Worcester presents: An Evening With Yo-Yo Ma: Reflections in Words and Music
DESCRIPTION:Reflections in Words and Music\nThe Annual Arthur M. & Martha R. Pappas Foundation Concert\nThe special event with Yo-Yo Ma pairs repertoire from the center of his musical firmament with reflections on how it has shaped his thinking about art\, human nature\, and our search for meaning. Together\, the cellist’s music and words ask us to consider what music is for\, and how it can guide us on a path towards hope. \nBiography\nYo-Yo Ma’s multi-faceted career is testament to his belief in culture’s power to generate trust and understanding. Whether performing new or familiar works for cello\, bringing communities together to explore culture’s role in society\, or engaging unexpected musical forms\, Yo-Yo strives to foster connections that stimulate the imagination and reinforce our humanity.\n\n\nMost recently\, Yo-Yo began Our Common Nature\, a cultural journey to celebrate the ways that nature can reunite us in pursuit of a shared future. Our Common Nature follows the Bach Project\, a 36-community\, six-continent tour of J. S. Bach’s cello suites paired with local cultural programming. Both endeavors reflect Yo-Yo’s lifelong commitment to stretching the boundaries of genre and tradition to understand how music helps us to imagine and build a stronger society.\n\n\nYo-Yo Ma was born in 1955 to Chinese parents living in Paris\, where he began studying the cello with his father at age four. When he was seven\, he moved with his family to New York City\, where he continued his cello studies before pursuing a liberal arts education.\n\n\nYo-Yo has recorded more than 120 albums\, is the winner of 19 Grammy Awards\, and has performed for nine American presidents\, most recently on the occasion of President Biden’s inauguration. He has received numerous awards\, including the National Medal of the Arts\, the Presidential Medal of Freedom\, and the Birgit Nilsson Prize. He has been a UN Messenger of Peace since 2006\, and was recognized as one of TIME magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2020. \nLarge photo: © Jason Bell\nSmall photo: ©Austin Mann\n\nDate: January 10\, 2025 7:30 to 9:00pm\nTicket Price: Start at $75\n\nBuy Tickets \n\n\nPlease Note\, there is a 4 ticket limit per household for this event. \n

Composed of 75 mixed voices\, the St. Olaf Choir is hailed as one of the nation’s premier a cappella ensembles\, renowned for its artistry and beauty of sound. \n  \n\n“We seek to be a transforming force in society through choral performance\, bringing understanding\, mercy\, justice\, peace\, and hope to a world that desperately cries out for these things.” – Anton Armstrong \n\n\nTickets \n\nTier 1: $45 \nTier 2: $37 \nTier 3: $30 \nSTUDENTS: $10 \n*Please note\, Balcony seating is not accessible by elevator and may not be suitable for those with mobility concerns \n\nFor more than a century\, the St. Olaf Choir\, conducted by Dr. Anton Armstrong\, has set the gold standard for choral singing\, performing for millions around the world. Composed of 75 mixed voices\, the St. Olaf Choir is hailed as one of the nation’s premier a cappella ensembles\, renowned for its artistry and beauty of sound.  \nThe St. Olaf Choir was founded in 1912 by F. Melius Christiansen\, whose work established the ensemble’s standard of excellence and its tradition of bringing music to audiences outside of campus. Christiansen chose spiritually profound music and pushed student musicians to perfect a tone that was disciplined\, controlled\, and free of excessive vibrato. That sound — securely in tune\, controlled in pitch\, smooth in delivery — became the choir’s hallmark. \nWhen Armstrong took the helm in 1990\, his vast knowledge of music and his ability to articulate a vision to singers and audiences alike took the St. Olaf Choir to the next level\, adding more flavor to its signature sound and further expanding its repertoire to include music of the Pacific Rim\, Africa\, and Latin America. \nUnder Armstrong’s leadership\, the choir continues to expand its touring horizons\, engaging capacity audiences in major concert halls throughout the United States and worldwide. The ensemble has toured internationally 16 times. Most recently the St. Olaf Choir toured South Africa for three weeks in 2024\, performing alongside Tuks Camerata\, Quava Vocal Group\, and other standout choral ensembles. \n  \n\nAnton Armstrong\, Tosdal Professor of Music at St. Olaf College\, became the fourth conductor of the St. Olaf Choir in 1990. He is a graduate of St. Olaf College and earned advanced degrees at the University of Illinois and Michigan State University. He is editor of a multicultural choral series for Earthsongs Publications and co-editor (with John Ferguson) of the revised St. Olaf Choral Series for Augsburg Fortress Publishers. In June 1998\, he began his tenure as founding conductor of the Oregon Bach Festival Stangeland Family Youth Choral Academy. ] In January 2006\, Baylor University selected Anton Armstrong from a field of 118 distinguished nominees to receive the Robert Foster Cherry Award for Great Teaching and spent February–June 2007 in residency at Baylor University as a visiting professor. In October 2009\, he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Michigan State University. In June 2013\, Dr. Armstrong received the Saltzman Award from the Oregon Bach Festival. The festival’s highest honor\, the Saltzman Award is bestowed upon individuals who have provided exceptional levels of leadership to the organization. Dr. Armstrong is a highly sought-after clinician and guest conductor\, and works with many of the world’s most prestigious organizations and ensembles. \n
