SUMMARY:Music Worcester presents: Philip Glass Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:Philip Glass Ensemble\n\n\nThe Philip Glass Ensemble (PGE) comprises the principal performers of the music of Philip Glass. In 1968\, Glass founded the PGE in New York City as a laboratory for his music. Its purpose was to develop a performance practice to meet the unprecedented technical and artistic demands of his compositions. In pioneering this approach\, the PGE became a creative wellspring for Glass\, and its members remain inimitable interpreters of his work.\n\nThe artists of the PGE recognize their unique position in the history of music of the past half-century\, and passing on that legacy is part of their practice. A deep dedication to educating the next generation of musicians is integral to the PGE’s work\, both on tour and as the Ensemble-in-Residence at The Philip Glass Institute at The New School.\n\nThe PGE debuted at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1969\, and in its early years performed primarily in the galleries\, artist lofts\, and museums of SoHo’s then-thriving artistic community. In the five decades since\, the PGE has performed in world-renowned music festivals and concert halls across five continents\, and has made records with Sony\, Nonesuch\, and Orange Mountain Music.\n\nMany of Philip Glass’s most celebrated works were expressly composed for the PGE: its core concert pieces Music in Twelve Parts\, Music in Similar Motion\, and Music with Changing Parts; the opera and musical theater projects Einstein on the Beach\, Hydrogen Jukebox\, 1000 Airplanes on the Roof\, Monsters of Grace; and the full-length dance works Dance (Lucinda Childs) and A Descent Into the Maelström (Australian Dance Theater). The PGE is most widely acclaimed for its soundtracks to Godfrey Reggio’s trilogy of wordless films: Koyaanisqatsi\, Powaqqatsi\, and Naqoyqatsi. It is also featured in Glass’s operas La Belle et la Bête and The Photographer.\n\n \n\n\nTICKETS\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nProgram\n\n\nMusic in Eight Parts (1969/2017)\nGlassworks (1981)

SUMMARY:Club 321 Featuring Ali McGuirk
DESCRIPTION:Blending classic soul power with a folk songwriter lyricism\, New England’s Ali McGuirk has the rare ability to silence a room with just a few words of a song. With a voice that is raw and sultry and a style rooted in improvisation\, her sets are a hypnotic and intimate journey.\n \n\n“With all the hooks of Lake Street Dive but more earthy tenderness and smart introspection\, McGuirk will be the Bay State’s next big export.”\n\n– BOSTON HERALD\n\n“Powerfully stunning vocals… the most outstanding performance of the day.”\n\n— GLIDE MAGAZINE\n\n“‘Til It’s Gone’ is more than just a showcase of musicianship. McGuirk brings a songwriter’s sensibility\, and a millennial’s perspective\, to her lyrics… In just a few deft strokes\, McGuirk\n paints a devastating and deeply human picture..” \n\n– WBUR\n \n\nOn her Signature Sounds Recordings debut ’Til It’s Gone\, McGuirk delivers a sublime set of songs that pairs her trademark soul sound with rootsy turns and raw rock ‘n’ roll detours. The album landed on the Boston Globe’s Top 50 Albums list for 2022. Consequence of Sound raved\, “All Back’ feels like it could exist somewhere outside of space and time– it could be on a record in the background of a party in a 1970s bungalow\, or it could be on your Discover Weekly playlist on Spotify. Either way\, it’s a great listen.”\n \n\nMcGuirk co-produced ‘Til It’s Gone with Jonah Tolchin (a star singer-songwriter in his own right) and a set of session legends: Little Feat guitarist/mandolinist Fred Tackett\, organist Larry Goldings (James Taylor\, Norah Jones)\, singer Valerie Pinkston (Ray Charles\, Luther Vandross)\, percussionist Lenny Castro (Stevie Nicks\, Stevie Wonder). They provided the astounding chops\, but the true magic of the album comes from McGuirk’s singular voice as both singer and songwriter. The nine tracks run from intimate introspection to wider meditations on oppression and justice\, from tough r&b and tender soul to big rock guitar and twangy folk. And McGuirk’s voice – bold\, buttery\, spellbinding – carries each song to the next til they’re gone. \n\n\n\n\nalimcguirk.com\n\n\n\n\nTickets: $20 Advance Purchase | $23 at the Door\nMembers: 15% discount off single ticket (enter your promo code when checking out)\nTime: Doors 6:15pm | Show 7:00pm\nAudience: 18+\n \nCash bar and refreshments available for purchase \n\nBuy Tickets\n\n\n\n\nMechanics Hall is walking distance from all downtown locations.
