The Carnegie Hero Fund awards the Carnegie Medal to individuals in the United States and Canada who risk death or serious physical injury to an extraordinary degree saving or attempting to save the lives of others. Through the City of Worcester, the Carnegie Medal will be awarded to Four Worcester Police Officers, a Massachusetts State Trooper, and a civilian.
On June 4, 2021 Worcester Police Officer Steven Barnett, Worcester Police Officer Angela Consiglio, Worcester Police Officer Enmanuel Familia, Worcester Police Officer Scott Morin and Massachusetts State Trooper Amy Waterman attempted to rescue a group of teens struggling to stay afloat in the pond at Green Hill Park. Officer Familia died while trying to save 14-year-old Troy Love who also drowned. Two other teens were pulled safely to shore by officers. Officers continuously dived and searched for Officer Familia and Troy Love. Their bodies were recovered from the water later that day. Most of the officers involved in the rescue and recovery attempt needed medical treatment at a nearby hospital and were later released.
Additionally, a civilian, Allen Corson will receive the Carnegie medal. Mr. Corson attempted to save a woman during a stabbing at a Worcester restaurant. Mr. Corson confronted the assailant, wrestling and pinning him to the floor. As they struggled, the assailant, who was wielding a knife in each hand, stabbed Mr. Corson in his left side. The victim had slipped from the assailant’s grasp and was sitting against a wall with fatal stab wounds. Two other men joined Mr. Corson in securing the assailant until police arrived and arrested him. The woman died of her wounds. Mr. Corson received sutures and recovered.
With this announcement, the Carnegie Medal has been awarded to 10,324 individuals since the inception of the Pittsburgh-based Fund in 1904.
