With Tribute to Worcester’s Abolitionist Legacy
Acclaimed pianist and composer Barron Ryan brings his genre-defying program Classic Meets Cool to Mechanics Hall on Wednesday, April 29 at 7:00 PM, offering an evening that blends classical music with jazz, gospel, and contemporary influences-alongside a special tribute rooted in Worcester’s history.
As part of the performance, Ryan will present an original composition honoring William and Martha Brown, prominent Worcester abolitionists of the mid-19th century known for their leadership and influence in the Worcester community; in 1868, William Brown broke racial barriers as the first Black American member of the Worcester County Mechanics Association. A portrait of the Browns was commissioned and installed in the Mechanics Hall portrait gallery in 2024, alongside new works featuring Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth. Ryan’s new composition connects the evening’s artistic exploration with the city’s enduring legacy of civic engagement and cultural impact.
Praised for his charisma and versatility, Ryan reimagines familiar music—from pop songs to nursery rhymes—in inventive and engaging ways. His performances are designed to be welcoming and engaging for audiences of all backgrounds.
“Great music knows no boundaries,” said Ryan. “I love taking something familiar and turning it into a new experience—something that surprises people, makes them laugh, and invites them to hear music in a different way.”
Beginning at 6:15 PM and continuing through intermission, guests are invited to explore a curated exhibition and auction of artwork by local youth artists, benefiting the Worcester Educational Development Foundation. Showcasing work created by students in Worcester-area schools, the exhibition highlights emerging artistic voices while supporting arts education and connecting the evening’s performance to the next generation of creatives.
